Shaw Power is divided into fossil and nuclear divisions, and includes the former Stone & Webster, Inc. Shaw's Power division provides global engineering, design, procurement, construction, and maintenance services to the energy industry.

History

The group was founded in 1987 by J.M. Bernhard Jr., the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, and two individuals as a fabrication shop. The company was originally known as Shaw Industries Inc. The company grew by acquiring stock of Alloy Piping Products, Fronek A/DE, Inc, Naptech, Inc., Pipe Shields Inc., United States Crafts, Inc., Merit Industrial Constructors, Inc., Cojafex B.V., Prospect Industries plc, joined with Entergy Corporation to create EntergyShaw L.L.C., Stone & Webster Inc., The IT Group, Inc., Envirogen, Inc., MWR, Inc., Badger Technologies from Washington Group International, and Energy Delivery Services from Duke Energy Global Markets, Inc. In 2006 the company acquired a 20% interest in the Westinghouse Electric Company. The company has grown by 28,000 employees in 23 years.

The company is currently preparing to build a factory in Louisiana which will be one of only a few worldwide which can make a pressure vessel for a nuclear reactor. The only companies able to manufacture this item as of 2010 are one in Japan, two companies in China, and one in Russia.[2] The steel pressure vessel forgings contain the nuclear reactor core.[3] This factory will be a joint venture with General Electric and will be located in Lake Charles, Louisiana.[4][5]

Environmental record

Shaw has over 30 years of experience in managing wastes of all types, including radioactive, mixed, hazardous, and sanitary.[6] They work closely with federal, state, and local regulators to ensure safety and compliance in the handling, processing, treating, transporting, and disposal of these wastes.[6] On March 6, 2008, the Shaw Group was awarded a contract by the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment AFCEE).[7]"Shaw has supported AFCEE for more than 15 years by providing a complete range of traditional and environmental design and construction services worldwide," said Ronald W. Oakley, president of Shaw's Environmental & Infrastructure Group.[7][8]

In 2010 Shaw was ordered by The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to improve the way it responds to safety complaints from employees, following the firing of an employee who felt substandard protective paint coatings were being applied to critical parts of a nuclear plant's cooling systems.[9]

Hurricane Katrina contracts

After Katrina hit, the Shaw group hired the former head of the Projects and Contracting Office in Baghdad, Charles Hess, who also had experience working at FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers. Shaw was also one of several companies who won contracts from FEMA who are represented by former FEMA head, Joe Allbaugh.[10] [11]

As part of Shaw's work providing 24,000 FEMA trailers, the company was cited after explosions for failing to follow proper safety standards.[12]

Ticker symbol

The Shaw Group formerly had the three letter ticker symbol SGR. On August 21, 2009, the company took advantage of the recent change to allow the use of four letter ticker symbols on the NYSE to adopt the ticker symbol SHAW. [13]
